Florianopolis Island is the most popular city in Brazil after Rio de Janeiro. It is beautiful, and has amazing sites to see, wha tis more it gives off a Hawaian atmosphere for surfing, preserving nature, healthy lifestyle and the environment. It is the capital of the Santa Catarina. We love it because of the surfing. Hawaii is reborn in Florianópolis’ forty beaches just on the island and over one hundred beaches if you include the parts of the city that sits on the main land. It is by far the best city and location in Brazil for surfing.
The island picks up swell from the Southern Atlantic as well as Antartica. The best time for these swell systems is between March to May and then again between September until November. The water is cold here so take your wetsuit, so you can stay in the water longer and enjoy the epic conditions.
How to get here: Fly to Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro and then take another short hour and a half flight to Florianopolis. Flying in Brazil is almost like catching the bus in the US, flights often stop off in a number of cities along the way to pick up and drop off passengers on their way around the country. Florianopolis is close enough that you will be one of the first stops. Peak season is between Dec – Feb so expect to pay more during that time. These times are popular because of Brazils summer months when the beaches are packed with beach goers and surfers alike, as well as Carnival and New Years eve.
Arriving in Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, Florianopolis is a short one and half hour flight. Spend a day or two in Sao Paulo or Rio on your way down. Rio has it’s share of surf, but expect serious crowds and hassling for waves.
